Elaine Martin's enigmatic characters lead us into a grungy, sensual world. She finds her inspiration in femininity, a recurring theme in her works, in the feeling of otherness and in the streets of her Centre-Sud neighbourhood in Montreal. Her style is at times cartoony; the clean, graphic lines mix seamlessly with visible brush strokes and paint drips. Over the years, her choice of colours has narrowed down to the turquoise, red and pink of the eighties. Light plays a central role in her work as well, offering areas of darkness that lend her subjects anonymity. Each scene is unspoken, mysterious. A Montreal native, Elaine's works have been displayed in Tokyo, New York, Sydney and London, as well as many Canadian cities.
